The Department of Journalism and Creative Media seeks a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor in the area of media production. The position begins August 16, 2020.

The successful candidate will have expertise in traditional narrative (cinematic or episodic) or documentary film/video. Possible teaching areas include cinematography, visual effects, post-production, sound and sound design, producing, and screenwriting. The candidate should demonstrate strong potential for achieving a national/international reputation in one or more of these areas. Experience with underrepresented communities is also valued. A terminal degree is required (an MFA in film production or film-related discipline preferred) and preference will be given to candidates with an existing record of professional experience in film production. Salary is nationally competitive.

The candidate would also have opportunities to work with department-supported programs such as the Black Warrior Film Festival and C&IS Los Angeles, an immersive program that brings students to L.A. to study and connect with the entertainment industry. Collaboration with other College units will be encouraged, including the Digital Media Center, home to three professional media outlets—the production facilities of the state’s Center for Public Television and Radio, Alabama Public Radio, and WVUA 23, a full-power commercial television station serving the Birmingham market.
